MILEPOST 31 WILDFIRE - Post-wildfire Seeding Project

BFI drill seeded approximately 400 acres of burned rangelands on the Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge Complex as part of wildland rehabilitation efforts. A seed mix was developed that was appropriate for the sandy soils at the site and the relatively low annual precipitation (8 inches/year). Seeding was conducted with a rangeland drill during late fall 2012 and winter 2013. The seed mix was composed of Indian ricegrass, SandbergÂ’s bluegrass, Sand dropseed, Bottlebrush squirreltail, Thickspike wheatgrass, Western yarrow and LewisÂ’ Flax.

Weed treatment was extensive and targeted several different species in different areas of the site. Prior to seeding, a light glyphosate application was applied to target cheatgrass. The specialized herbicide, Milestone, was also sprayed in approximately one third of the burn area to control Russian knapweed. Other treatments included the use of the herbicide, Capstone, for the uncommon noxious weed, camelthorn, and the spot spraying of Phragmites (Common reed) with Glyphosate and Clearcast, with a custom-built All-terrain-vehicle sprayer.
